Default Monitor Question

Heres the stats for the monitior I have picked out for the new rig. I don't know much about the things, so I welcme your professional opinions.

NEC 17" MultiSync FE771SB Flat CRT - Black

Model: FE771SB
Monitor Size: 17"
Viewable: 16.0"
Dot Pitch: 0.25mm
Aperture Grille
Max Resolution: 1280 x 1024
(H) Frequency: 30-70 kHz
(V) Frequency: 50-120 Hz
Refresh Rate @ Max Res: 66 Hz
Dimensions: 15.6 in. x 16.2 in. x 16.4 in. (W x H x D)

Priced at $164.00
I'm looking for something functional/reliable but affordable, because the rest of the machine is allready pretty pricey looking.

Hrm, the price looks okay but the maximum resolution is 1280x1024, at 60Hz (60Hz = crazy eye strain more flicker).

The Samsung SyncMaster 950B is a pretty decent looking budget 19" though. Newegg has it for $180 with free shipping, too. It supports up to 1600x1200 @ 85Hz. 85Hz is plenty for your average user, and then some.

Nice!!! Get the Samsung SyncMaster 950B definately... 66Hz will make your eyes and head hurt a LOT!! You really want the highest refresh rate you can get. I can't even stand looking at less than 85Hz anymore. I had to lower the res to 1024x768 just to do that. Low refresh rate will really cause problems for you especially if you use your computer for hours on end.

I would probably run it in 10x7 mode at the most, I'm not picky about tiny resolution, in that mode it would probably have a higher refresh right? The Syncmaster 950b seems to run at 68hz at 16x12, at least the one I was looking at.

The FE771SB runs at 10x7 at 85hz. That would be perfect for me I think. But thanks for helping me out with refresh rates, I wouldn't have known what numbers to look for.

Yep 68Hz at 1600x1200, but that's pretty hi res, especially if you are used to 1024x768. It does 1280x1024 @ 85Hz though, and I'm sure 1024x768 does at least that.

Oh and BTW it's a 19" compared toa 17" I think it's certainly a better value

Yeah for like 20 bucks more you get a bigger monitor with a better resolution and refresh rate... Not black though.

Yeah I won't discourage you from your choice but a nice looking monitor is real important. You can get a $400 video card and if you're on a POS monitor it's going to be very frustrating. I bought a crappy 19" AOC a few years back and I've regretted not spending the extra loot on a NICE 19". And my AOC has better specs than the FE771SB. If you are absolutely sure you will never use anythign but 1024x768 you're probably fine, but if you are getting a top of the line video card, you'll be able to play games at 1280x1024 with a nice refresh and it will look awesome. Either way good luck with the decision!

Does brand name mean much for monitors? Does newegg have good warantees on this stuff? It does seem like a good deal, I'm just paranoid about too good a deal. I don't want anything to break in a year or so. I guess I'll always have the old monitor for backup though...
