Where do you want to watch today?
Ever wish you didn't have to pause your movie while you get up to microwave another grilled cheese sandwich? ...... Oh... Well maybe you'll find this useful anyway.
Ingredients:
1 video device with composite video out (TV, DVD, etc)
1 TV tuner card ($35) with composite video in
1 desktop PC with Windows 2000/2003/XP
1 wireless router
1 laptop with wireless card (preferrably Tablet PC)
1 Microsoft Windows Media Encoder
Mix PC, TV tuner card and Windows Media Encoder in large bowl
First, you need to install your TV tuner card in your desktop PC. I'll assume you can figure that out on your own. Next hook your video output device (DVD player, etc) to your TV tuner card. Now you need to install Microsoft Windows Media Encoder on the desktop PC.
Preheat oven to 802.11 g
When you start up Windows Media Encoder for the first time, you'll be presented with a "New Session" wizard. Select "Broadcast a live event", and hit "OK". Now select your tuner card and the correct audio device for your system. You'll also need to make sure your recording settings are set up correctly in the Windows volume control. After you've made your selections, hit "Next". You want to "Pull from the encoder". Hit "Next". Choose a port. The default 8080 will probably be fine, but keep in mind that you might need to open that port in your Windows firewall (or ZoneAlarm, etc) if you have it enabled. Make a note of the URL for LAN connections and hit "Next". From the Video dropdown, select VHS or DVD, depending on the speed of your wireless network. From the Audio dropdown, select CD quality. Now hit "Next" all the way through until you're finished with the wizard. If it didn't automatically start encoding, hit the "Start Encoding" button.
Now turn on your video output device (TV, DVD player, etc). Head on over to your laptop and open up an internet browser window. Put in the URL for LAN connections you saw earlier, but instead of "http://", use "mms://". Go to that URL and Windows Media Player should pop up and start buffering.
Let cool 20 minutes. Serve warm.
Congratulations! You now have the ability to annoy amaze your friends and family with your incredible powers of wireless TV!
