Default First 10 Programs You Install

There was an interesting thread on Slashdot today:
http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/....shtml?tid=185

What are the first 10 programs you install after wiping your system?

Right now, mine would be (on a Windows box):

1 ) All driver updates and Windows patches.
2 ) NortonAV + all updates
3 ) Spybot + all updates
4 ) Thunderbird
5 ) Firefox
6 ) AIM (haven't bothered to look for an alternative)
7 ) MS Office (OpenOffice.org is looking nice though)
8 ) My burning software (currently Roxio Easy Media Creator)
9 ) PowerDVD
10 ) Quicktime with iTunes

Something like that anyway. I haven't reinstalled Linux or OS X frequently enough to have it down to a routine yet.

Yeah, mostly to communicate with my biz partner, but then again he's the only person I know who has it. The sound quality is pretty damn good, I wear my headset and never think twice about the quality.

Gotfolk not sure about your Open Office experience but it's really a great app these days. I don't know why it wouldn't work for you, Writer starts faster than Word for me. Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheet all provice heavy competition for Word, Excel, adn PowerPoint.

I prefer Norton, but only if you have the latest version. There are some newer virus's that Norton 2003 and below can't detect, even with all of the updates installed. 2004 is also a lot better at applying updates in the background without bothering you about it. 2004 will also detect some spyware progs that Spybot and Adaware don't. One thing that is nice about Norton is that the virus definitions are dated rather than just having a version number, so you can tell at a glance if you are up to date or not. Norton seems to take up almost no resources at all for me.

I've never really liked McAfee, or PC-Cillin, but they're both probably fine as long as you keep them up to date. Virus protection alone isn't enough though. Spyware protection, firewalls, timely security patches, good passwords, and other good security procedures are also a must.
