Default Intel can blow me! Tualatin - WTF

Awhile ago I ordered some parts for my parents' computer. I built their machine a number of years ago and stuck a Celeron 600E in it. I figure now, I can get a 1GHz+ Pentium III for them and step it up for $70, including some new RAM.

So I order this processor, get it, install it. It beeps like a mofo. Check the motherboard manual. DRAM not found. Take out new RAm, try again. Beeps. Install old processor; works fine. Install new RAM. Works fine.

I then jump online and track processor to discover it is a P3 Tualatin, a late design upgrade model that has an FCPGA2 pin layout, not FCPGA. I look into it further only to discover that there's an adapter you can buy that will remap an FCPGA motherboard to work with an FCPGA2 mobo. WTF!

$6 for the damn adapter. I'm trying' to save money here, not expend more! Fockers.

That sucks. Upgrading tends to be a pain in the ass. Usually the people looking to me for an upgrade have some POS from 1982, and they seem to think that they can fit a P4 and a gig of DDR in their 2MHz 8086. Upgrades only take you so far, especially with the state of processors these days. Socket A was great, because it was around forever. You could go from a crappy Duron up to a Barton and actually see a good performance increase. Now AMD is going through sockets like a street whore goes through clientelle.

I finally put it all together yesterday, the Tualatin processor, Lin-Lin 370 adapter, and the ASUS CUSL2 mobo. It took me awhile to figure out the jumper configuration on the adapter, but lo and behold, the damn thing worked. Celeron 633MHz successfully upgraded to Pentium III 1.13GHz. He he; that looks sooo slow, a mere 1 GHz.

Upgrade to a 1GHz, that does sound funny now.

Glad you got it taken care of!

If you want the jumper settings for the lin-lin adapter you should go here:

http://www.hardwarecooling.com/produ.../reviews_id/15

A customer from HardwareCooling.com purchased the adapter and translated the jumper settings from Chinese into English. Yes, I believe the customer was Chinese since his name was Eric Chan. There are a few customer posting some interesting remarks in regards to being able to overclock their machine with the Tualatin adapter.

Hi sleekseek40, welcome to FTF!

Thanks for the link, hopefully that will be of use to anyone else trying to deal with this product.
