Default Switch Fan

hey guys, i recently got a used dlink dss +16 switch, and when i powered it up, the fan makes a grinding noise, and doesnt move a lot of air. inside it's two boards with something like a cpu on each one covered by a heatsink, they get pretty hot. the question is, is it safe to just remove it, and go without a fan? or am i risking overheating on the switch?

The fan is probably there for a reason. If that switch is in a consistantly cool environment (AC), then you might be OK. If it gets too hot it will probably start fucking up and dropping packets, and your network will seem to be running slower. It will likely get progressively worse until it craps out completely. I would see if you can find a replacement fan for it. Something the same size with the same pinout. Or you might want to see if you can return it and get your money back. If you only paid a few bucks for it maybe it's worth risking it melting on you. Personally I don't like taking risks unless I stand to gain considerably from them.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to splice a new fan on there. A lot of manufacturer's use very standard fans, so look for a model no., voltage, etc. on the fan itself.

A little reading told me that DLINK stopped selling those units with fans, and now sell the same thing (same model no.) without a fan. I don't know if they modified it significantly to work without the fan, or if the fan was just unnecessary. If you do run without the fan you might have luck for this reason, but I'd probably just splice a new fan on there and call it good.

P.S. Welcome to FTF!

the reason that these units dont come with fans anymore is cuz they sell them with only 3.5 amps, not the 5 amps mine is with

You might try going to your local computer chop shop and see if they have any compatible fans in their junk pile.
